Green power plant in Mekong Delta

Can Tho, Vietnam, the largest city on the Mekong Delta. On November 26, 2018, a modern waste incineration power plant, the Everbright Can Tho Project, was put into operation and connected to the grid. As of February this year, it has handled 56,700 tons of domestic garbage, accounting for 60% of the total amount of garbage collected in the same section of the city of Can Tho, providing 12.43 million kilowatt hours of green power, meeting the daily electricity consumption of nearly 1,700 ordinary residents.

The Everbright Can Tho Project is invested, constructed and operated by China Everbright Group, a subsidiary of China Everbright Group, with a total investment of more than 304 million yuan. The annual sewage treatment capacity of the project is 146,000 tons, and the annual supply of green power is about 60 million kilowatt hours. It can save 25,000 tons of standard coal and 10,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, which can meet the daily electricity consumption of about 8,000 ordinary residents.

“The Everbright Can Tho Project has an advanced waste incineration process, which will greatly solve the current situation of poor domestic landfill disposal equipment and serious environmental pollution, and contribute to the steady progress of the solid waste treatment planning in Can Tho.” Can Tho Tao Yingyong, deputy director of the People's Committee, said.

At the beginning of the construction, the Everbright Can Tho project aimed at “building a green benchmark project in the Mekong Delta”, and adopted international leading standards from process design, equipment selection to plant construction.

"This is the China Everbright Group's first overseas environmental projects the whole industry chain, is Vietnam's first modern production of garbage power generation project, is an important achievement in the cooperation, it is green 'along the way' pragmatic cooperation in fresh practice." China Everbright Group chairman Li Xiaopeng said.

It is worth mentioning that, Everbright Tho project's core technology and equipment by Everbright International independent research and development, technical level reached the international advanced level. In recent years, China Everbright Group continued to increase its efforts to support the development of environmental protection industry, invested a total of nearly 100 billion yuan, it has built more than 300 garbage power generation in more than 100 cities in China, hazardous waste disposal, water treatment and related items.

While providing clean energy to the local area, the Everbright Can Tho project also absorbed 112 people in the local and surrounding areas of Can Tho, accounting for more than 90% of the project staff. Chen Wei, deputy general manager of the Everbright Can Tho Project, said that in order to improve the overall level of the local waste incineration power generation industry, the company selected 20 key employees to go to China for professional training, and they have become technical leaders in related fields.

“Many cities in Asia face solid waste management challenges, and the Can Tho project provides an effective and environmentally friendly solution that can help countries reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.” Asian Development Bank Private Sector Operations East Asia Infrastructure Ms. Shouxiang, Director of the Finance Department, said at the completion ceremony of the project.

In February 2018, the Asian Development Bank provided a $100 million loan to Everbright International to support Everbright's construction of a domestic waste power generation project in several cities in Vietnam. On the second day of the completion of the Can Tho Project, Everbright International signed a framework agreement on waste disposal services with the government of Hue, Vietnam.

With the deepening of the “Belt and Road” construction and the universal recognition of the global concept of green development, the huge demand and development potential of the green “Belt and Road” construction is gradually being released.
